Norsys: Giving Nature a Science-Based Voice in IT Services

Norsys, a leading French Digital Services Group, pioneered "Nature Governance" by granting Nature a voting seat on its Board of Directors. This initiative, led by Thomas Breuzard (Permaenterprise Director) and Julien Gautier (Project Officer), aims to ensure that environmental impact is a primary consideration in every corporate decision.

Norsys: Norsys: Giving Nature a Science-Based Voice in IT Services

Challenge

A board seat for Nature needed data behind it

For Nature to have a decisive voice on a board, that voice must be equipped with data. Norsys recognized that their primary environmental impact wasn’t just in their offices, but embedded deep within their value chain; specifically in the lifecycle of the hardware and electronics they procure.

Norsys needed to go from high-level ambition to scientific reality in an industry that has not yet established industry specific methodologies and standards.

Solution

Goals, workflows, and a knowledge library built the roadmap

Julien utilized Spirefly to transform Norsys’s nature ambition into a professional, actionable roadmap:

  • Using Goals, Julien defined clear objectives. The AI leveraged peer strategies and global frameworks to generate a workplan, organized into clear milestones and tasks.
  • Through workflows, Julien was guided through quantitative assessments (e.g. mapping water scarcity) and strategic tasks (e.g. understanding the reporting landscape).
  • Using Spirefly’s knowledge library, Norsys was able to project complex global frameworks, like the Planetary Boundaries framework, directly onto their unique business context and data.

Result

A data-backed voice for Nature in board decisions

  • A “Science-Based” voice for nature: The Nature Board Representative can now use localized risk and impact data during strategic meetings to ensure that board decisions are aligned with planetary boundaries.
  • From theory to application in minutes: “applying” a 100-page industry-standard onto real business data was a matter of minutes.
“The progress on our nature journey achieved with Spirefly is impressive. It’s a highly specialized system that got us from procurement data all the way to supply chain insights that hold real weight in our strategic decisions.”

From pilot to policy: HEMA's nature journey with Spirefly

HEMA is a hundred years old, runs more than 700 stores, and sells almost everything a household needs: food, fashion, cosmetics, electronics. With SBTi targets committed, a solid set of sustainability KPIs, and sustainability linked loans in place, HEMA has turned ambition into accountability. Their 2025 sustainability report is the first to publish a nature assessment across the entire assortment. Five nature impact and risk categories, scored across 40,000 products, aligned with the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) and the Taskforce on Nature Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). Spirefly is the platform behind it. For HEMA's Head of Sustainability, Marieke Doolaard, sustainability is not a side project. This is the story of how HEMA went from a first nature pilot to a public policy backed by data, and how Spirefly helped make that possible.
